More about our Introduction to Photography:

Led by local professional photographer David Charles Mason, this three-part workshop is designed to be fun, friendly and entirely accessible - whether you're shooting on a DSLR, mirrorless camera or even a good quality smartphone. David's philosophy is refreshingly simple: the fundamentals of photography are universal. Once you've mastered the basics, you can apply them to whatever area of photography captures your interest, from landscapes and portraits to street photography or wildlife.

Part 1 (runs across two separate sessions)

This is where it all begins. David will guide you through the essential principles of photography, covering common camera features and how to actually use them. Through a mixture of theory, hands-on practice and live demonstrations, you'll start to understand what's happening when you press that shutter button. If you're new to photography, this is the perfect starting point - and we'd recommend beginning here before moving on to the later parts.

Parts 2 and 3

Building on what you've learnt, you'll explore more advanced camera functions like histograms and exposure compensation. David will encourage and support you as you apply these techniques to your own camera, helping you troubleshoot and experiment until things click into place. By the end, you'll have the confidence to move your camera out of auto mode and start making creative decisions about how your images look.

Why photography?

Beyond the technical skills, photography is a genuinely rewarding creative outlet. It gives you a reason to notice the world around you more carefully, encourages you to explore new places, and engages your brain in that satisfying way that comes from learning something new. It's also wonderfully portable - you can practise anywhere, anytime.

Once you've completed the introduction workshop, David runs ongoing photography group sessions where you can continue developing your skills, share ideas and connect with other photography enthusiasts. All reference materials used during the lessons will be provided, so you can keep learning and exploring with your camera long after the workshop ends.

Come and discover what your camera can really do when you're the one in control.
